Subject: Information Regarding the Lucy Fuller Woodcock Report

Hello Chad,

After you first contacted me about my Family Origins web site containing Putnams, I hooked into your neat web site and found the Lucy Fuller Woodcock Report.  After carefully going over it, and having discussions with Camella Turner about it, we have learned that there are major flaws in the data.  She has been consulting with a genealogist working on the Percival line who recently responded to her questions.  Here is a copy of what she sent me:

Martha,

I am in contact with a gentleman who is researching the Percival line and I went to him for information. He wrote back this answer.

"You probably will not be surprised under the circumstances I related about the College of Arms rebutting some of the Perceval legend (pre 1400) if I answer your question by quoting from the main source of which they do approve - Henry Drummond's Noble British Families which was published in 1846. Drummond only covered twelve families - one of which was ours !!!! Anyway, according to Drummond no Richard Perceval married an Auberie and only two Richards are mentioned in the period before 1400, neither of whose wives are apparently known by that particular arbiter of Percevalia (in fact both Richards have "m." then a blank on page 8 of the Perceval section). However, Drummond does mention a lady named Auberie on page 3, in the portion covering William Lovell and the other three sons of Ascelin Gouel and Isabella de Breteuil, thus:
"Willaim Lovell was alive in 1153 m. Matilda de Mellento, or Meulan, and not de Bellemonte, which name was abandoned by the younger twin son of Roger de Beaumont and by his issue. She is erroneously called Auberie in the
Maison d'Harcourt, and copied by Lord Egmont. She was ... daughter of Robert Earl of Mellent and Leicester by his wife, Elizabeth de Vermandois, who was granddaughter of Henry King of France. She was living in 1203."

Obviously the underlining is mine NOT Drummond's. And as you will have deduced the reference to Lord Egmont is one of the many instances in which Drummond takes issue with my ancestor and his House of Yvery data.

Unfortunately College of Arms supports Drummond' s version for the pre-1400's and this is why I would not be helping you, or the person who queried about Richard, if I quote from House of Yvery in this regard.

Equally unfortunately a lot of other genealogists have picked up, and re-issued as irrefutable facts, the mistakes made quite innocently by John Perceval, First Earl of Egmont, who after all was doing his research under much more difficult circumstances in the early 1700's."

While Camella and I are trying to get some further clarifications,  it sounds like the material from her source that dates before 1400 is highly disputed or legendary.  At the very least there are major flaws in it, and I thought you should be aware of that. We are trying to find out more about it, but there are definite erroneous connections prior to, and more so as the dates approach, the 1400 year point. I personally went from having carefully entered all the data into my genealogy database to simply deleting it all from about the 1500-year point onward.  I had compared the material with data from a web site devoted to Royal ancestral lines that was more historically accurate, and found several discrepancies and impossibities.  I did not want about 800 names in my database of people that were not really related.

Just thought you should know since the data is on your web site.

I like your pictures on the web site.  We bought a scanner about three years ago, and I have yet to get into using it, but look forward to doing so.

Take care!

Subject: Re: Lucy Fuller Woodcock Report

Dear Chad,

The connections to 90% of the individuals in the Lucy Fuller Woodcock report are  unsubstantiated and disputed. That eliminates all the royalty lines, unfortunately.

I do not have an exact re-do of the Lucy Fuller Woodcock report in the original format, but what I do have is a report entitled "Descendants and Ancestors of Lucy Fuller Woodcock - 20 Generations."  (Lucy Fuller Woodcock is in the 3rd generation.) It is in my Family Origins text format, and should include basically the same data as the original report, plus things like immigration & occupation info for several ancestors.

Because our connections to the "ancestors" prior to the year 1400 were faulty, the report is a fraction of the original size, and it does not contain royalty.  Aubreye De Beaumont was the "ancestor" who connected everyone into the royal lines.  I double checked the connection (which was Aubreye De Beaumont's supposed marriage to Richard Gouel de Perceval) I could find no support whatsoever for that marriage anywhere.  I kept finding only that she married a William de Chatrauneuf.  When I brought this to Camella's attention, she looked into it and came to the same conclusion that it was erroneous.  Then she went a step further, consulting with a genealogist about the Percival line who basically said that the data prior to 1400 was disputed or legendary. Some of the material about the kings is accurate, some of it is contradicted by well-known royalty genealogy, some contradicts even the encyclopedia, but the concern for us is that the links formally thought to connect us to royalty is absent at this point.

The report entitled "Descendants and Ancestors of Lucy Fuller Woodcock - 20 Generations" is attached to this message.  It is about 10 pages long and includes an index. It reflects corrections and most dramatically - reduction to make it a vastly more accurate report.  You may use the report as you please.  It is in Rich Text Format.
